I've read a...Thanks for providing this excerpt. I've read a little about the book, but none OF the book. I'd actually like to read it from a clinical standpoint - I've had a few of my patients who've heard about it and read it and really identified with the children in the book - having demanding, emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive parents who did so "in the name of excellence." It's so unfortunate that treatment of children is so poorly addressed and corrected in our society. While I don't think it's usually a good idea to try to diagnosis someone without meeting them, I agree that there are many "issues" behind this mother's behavior, and that her actions didn't occur out of nowhere.
